| Description: |
Among the most basic of weapons, a spear is a long stick with a pointed end. The crudest version would be a simple stick with one end whittled to a point, and possibly fire-hardened. It is also fairly easy to mount a sharper spearhead made of stone or bone to the basic shaft. More advanced cultures can produce spears with metal points held in place by pins or bolts, possibly with part of the shaft sheathed in metal to make it more difficult for an opponent to cut off the point. Designs vary greatly in length, from a 2-foot stabbing version (e.g. the Zulu assegai) to 12-foot versions meant for use in mass formations (e.g. the Macedonian sarissa or Swiss pike). Weight will increase with length and metal content. Spears can be thrown; very long spears are unwieldy and inaccurate as thrown weapons. A spear designed and balanced specifically for throwing in more properly called a javelin. |
